Small tiles cover the whole field, each one set apart from its neighbours by a thin red line, so the surface reads like mosaic rather than pattern. Most of the tiles are brown — bark, chestnut, taupe — and into that base the weaver dropped orange, ivory, teal, aubergine and near-black, never twice in the same place.
The red seams are what hold it together; without them the colours would simply collide. Rows drift out of true as they climb, and the tiles change size to suit the space left over, which is the mark of tribal rug weaving worked without a plan. A narrow ivory border flecked with colour closes it off.
