Antique Indian Agra Rug, India, Early 20th Century – This extraordinary antique Agra does not derive from the repertoire of Indian or Persian carpets. Rather, it follows the format of the “ensi,” a door rug or curtain used at the entrance to the domical tents of the nomadic Turkomans of Central Asia. This piece, with its fine detail and multiple borders of stylized vine scrolls, relates specifically to the “Pendje” ensi of the Sayryk Turkoman tribe. The soft golden and cinnamon coloration, however, is not at all Turkoman, but classically Agra or North Indian, and it tones down the dazzling complexity of the design.
