Vintage Scandinavian Swedish Kilim Rug, Country of Origin: Sweden, Circa Date: Mid-20th Century – This marvelous vintage rug by Swedish artist Rakel Callander features a graphic compartmental pattern depicting a diverse selection of geometric patterns and textural cells that break up the casual yet well-organized composition. Woven with traditional techniques, this flat-woven kilim features geometric patterns with strong right angles and a richly textural background incorporating a complementary selection of peachy oranges, delicate pinks and coral reds that create a charming mottled stripe pattern. Coffered chests with notched edges, bear claw quadrants, stepped lozenge tiles, ornamental bars and repeating cruciform symbols decorate each patterned cell emphasizing a diverse range of shapes produced with simple right-angle motifs. Contrasting accent colors and calming neutrals add to the random nature of the carefully placed motifs while augmenting the soft white details and warm orangey reds that color the background and dominate the composition.
