Vintage Persian Red-Rust Tribal Gabbeh Allover Rug, Country of Origin: Persia, Circa Date: Vintage
One small motif repeats across the entire red field, five to a row and better than sixty in all: a rounded dark form outlined in gold, a rosette at its centre, two short sprigs rising from the top. The charcoal reads almost black against the red, and most of the rosettes are a bright crimson, lightening to ivory along the top row.
A true repeat is rarer here than the freehand drawing this weaving is known for — the unit has to hold its shape sixty times over, and it very nearly does, the columns drifting only slightly as they climb. The frame is where the discipline slips: a hooked orange and ivory chevron band, drawn far more loosely than the field it encloses.
At 3 ft 10 in by 6 ft 6 in it runs to the longer end of the 4 x 6 size rugs, and the allover repeat gives it more formality than most tribal rug weaving. Price is available on request, and the repeat can be run to any length as a custom rug.
