Vintage Shir Hashirim Rug, Origin: Israel, Circa: Early 20th Century – This handsome antique carpet from Israel’s famed art school features a superb artistic interpretation of a traditional medallion-and-corner design that retains classical details and reveals original features. The splendid medallion composition centers around an exquisite quatrefoil lozenge that is framed by a trellis of beautifully symmetric vine-scrolls with well-proportioned curves and lavish floral details. Black hairline accents highlight the edges of the luxuriant vines, polychrome flowers and buds that decorate the scrolling branches. Precisely aligned spandrels filled with a dense mesh of scrolling vines mirror a quadrant of the handsome medallion while segueing to the well-appointed borders. Undulating vines with bracketed decorations and ogival ornaments line the edges of the field, which is bordered by a series of zigzagging accents that contain discrete inscriptions.
