Antique Sili (Zili) Soumak, Caucasus, Late 19th Century – This unique and fascinating antique Oriental rug — an antique Silii (or Zili) Soumak, originally hand made in the Caucuses some time during the latter years of the nineteenth century — is a beautiful and intriguing piece that showcases many of the qualities and characteristics most desirable in such pieces, all while maintaining a profound individuality. Broad geometric motifs woven in alternating shades of blue and ivory decorate the bold red field of this colorful rug. A series of secondary protection symbols occupy the negative space between the hooks while ladder edges and secondary symbols define each large-scale figure. All in all, this antique rug is something truly special, and would certainly bring as much beauty, sophistication and elegance to a home of today as it would have brought upon its initial weaving, so long ago.
