The formal composition depicts a number of nested compartments that are decorated with an elaborate variety of ancient symbols. The strongly contrasting color scheme creates bold counter change patterns that accentuate the deeply serrated outlines and ladders of finger-like extensions. Elibelinde motifs, wolf’s mouth symbols and dramatic serrated stars with ram’s horn extensions decorate each ornate compartment. The grand compartments are separated by rows of bi-colored duality symbols that add a level of formality to the complex composition. Deep onyx blacks, warm terra cotta reds, crisp whites and calming celadon greens are juxtaposed beautifully and augment the layered language of symbols that appears throughout this exceptional antique Turkish kilim.
