Antique Textile, Laos, 2nd Quarter of the 20th Century – This extraordinary antique Laos textile features a series of bright, colorful Naga dragons. These symbolic beings are among the most powerful protective elements in the repertoire of Lao weavers. These magical creatures are symbols of duality and harbingers of abundance that are revered for their mystical powers. Subtle patterned motifs decorate the Nagas’ scaly bodies, and fine comb-like fins emphasize the Nagas’ power and presence. The graphic composition and zigzagging form of the Nagas’ bodies are supplemented with a rich assortment of colorful glyphs and auspicious cultural symbols. This exquisite antique Lao textile is a superb example of the area’s culture, vibrant colors and mystical symbolism.
