Antique Textile, Laos, 2nd Quarter of the 20th Century – Created in Laos, this brilliant antique Lao textile features a sophisticated assortment of repeating geometric motifs and auspicious symbols that are set over a regal background of cerise and mauve stripes. Lozenge-shaped figures with directional intersections frame a series of auspicious eight-pointed stars that are said to cast away negative spirits and are frequently used during ceremonies and rituals. These sophisticated repeating motifs carefully blend into the surrounding elements creating a complex pattern that is harmoniously interlocked. Striped end pieces decorated with directional cruciform motifs complete the composition and add a layer of symbolism that represents harmony and connectedness.
