Decorated with an exemplary variety of protection symbols, this awe-inspiring antique Sumak rug from the Caucasus features a lavishly decorated field rendered in a complete selection of classic colors. The bold vermillion red field features a radiant medallion rendered with complementary hues of azure, ultra-marine, ivory, soft yellow and rare emerald greens that offset the symbolic red background, which is said to represent prosperity, power and good luck. Important Caucasian protection symbols, including geometric humanoid figures, berekets and innumerable latch hook extensions, decorate the monochromatic field as well as the serrated segments and isolated compartments that divide the background. Vitruvian scroll outer borders, which create a strong counter change pattern, highlight the edges of the rug while unusual running dog borders decorated with floral motifs and birdlike animals frame the inner edge of the blossom-motif main borders. Ornate flowers and endless knots decorate the clear blue main borders along with birds and symbolic animals rendered in an archetypal Caucasian style.
