Created circa 1890, this magnificent antique Persian Sultanabad rug depicts a grand large-scale arabesque rendered in a beautiful variety of gently oxidized colors.

Antique Sultanabad Rug, Origin: Persia, Circa: Late 19th Century – This beautifully composed antique Persian Sultanabad rug depicts an exemplary allover arabesque. Grand palmettes, notched rosettes and articulated vine scrolls create a chic arabesque that meanders across the field while creating a series of light, airy openings that highlight the abrashed azure background. Crisp hairline outlines rendered in a deep hue of midnight blue highlight the graceful and intricate contours of each botanical motif. The exquisite terra cotta borders feature a stunning pattern of reciprocating curvilinear palmettes that are linked by a series of sweeping floral sprays. Densely patterned guard bands and elegant floral emblems emphasize the regal Persian style of this elegant antique Persian Sultanabad rug.

This late 19th century Sultanabad carpet is quite unique in its coloration and design. The floral based border pattern creates a fascinating juxtaposition against the more tribal and casual design in the field. This is a unique composition that we don’t come across often. This leads us to believe that the rug must have been a custom ordered piece by an individual who wanted to incorporate a border design that he / she must likely saw in a different rug. The uniqueness does not end there as the coloration is not typical as well. For every rug that incorporates the light blues and lighter rusts, there must have been over a thousand rugs woven with deeper and truer reds and blues. A greatly decorative piece with beautifully drawn out abashes, this carpet is a wonderful and unique example.
