Antique Khotan Rug, East Turkestan, early twentieth century An allover pattern of stepped diamond medallions unfolds with classical precision across the field of this stately antique Khotan. Eight-pointed stars adorn the interior of each medallion while a series of curling leaves create scalloped outlines or embellishments, producing a complex design effect of patterns within patterns. The main borders consist of double vinescrolls forming cartouches and rosettes, designs which, like those of the field, go back to forerunners of the Timurid period over five centuries ago. The lovely palette of soft blues, mauves, with sparing use of cocoa for outlines combines with the restrained allover design to make this a premier decorative carpet.
