The three large, round medallions that appear one on top of the next in the narrow field of this Khotan are especially notable for their eye-catching asymmetry, as well as for the subtle, understated detail work that occurs in each one. Further, the field is peppered with smaller tribal symbols, both floral and geometric. These smaller figured are woven in a darker tone than the secondary layer of detail, which is practically ephemeral in comparison. A delightful coming together of age and traditional, tribal elements of design make this antique Khotan from East Turkestan an especially fascinating – and attractive – antique rug.
