Antique Khotan, East Turkestan, late nineteenth century – After the fashion of the carpets of nearby Yarkand, a complex network of pomegranate vine scrolls repeats in allover symmetry across the field of this exceptional antique Khotan. A cloud border derived from Chinese carpets frames the entire composition, with minor borders of hooked rosettes and meandering fretwork transitioning back to the field. But what makes the entire design work so well is the uniform palette of soft sandy tan with linear accents of black and red for graphic yet subtle detail.
