Antique Caucasian Soumak Carpet, The Caucasus, circa Turn of the Twentieth Century – Here is a truly compelling antique Oriental rug – an antique Soumak carpet that was woven in the Caucasus around the turn of the twentieth century. Featuring a traditional design particular to the Caucus, this Soumak rug features stunning rectilinear and geometric detail work throughout. Beginning with the borders and working inward, this carpet offers up a series of delightful flourishes. The border itself is highly traditional, featuring a blue on ivory pattern and combination that is found in the finest antique Caucasian rugs. Meanwhile, the field is rich with similarly traditional detail elements. Colored a vibrant shade of red throughout, this long format field is characterized by the presence of abstract, geometric detail elements as well as rectilinear floral details. While most of the lovely flowers that pepper the field are colored blue, pink and and green examples appear as well. The subtle rectilinear vine scrolls that appear in the negative space add depth and dimension to the composition. A beautiful example, this antique Caucasian Soumak rug showcases some of the finer points of the style.
