Soumak Rug, Caucasus, Early 20th Century – This spectacular antique Soumak rug features a marvelous stacked-lozenge composition filled with Turkic protection symbols and cryptic motifs that are part of an ancient language of tradition and superstition. The warm, subtly abrashed madder red field is decorated with elegant strap work medallions that are filled with Turkic guls, tiny S-hooks and flurries of secondary protection symbols. Ornate guard bands filled with interconnected S-hook cartouches frame the beautifully colored main borders, which feature a decorative running water pattern. This antique Soumak rug is an outstanding example of Caucasian symbolism and design traditions, which incorporate truly ancient influences. Despite the history and secondary meanings, the bold colors and angular motifs have an extraordinary effect in modern interiors.
