Antique Bessarabian Kilim Rug, Origin: Romania, Circa: First Quarter of the 20th Century – This colorful antique Romanian kilim rug has a bold presence provided by the saturated colors and graphic right-angle motifs. The spectacular vermillion field displays dazzling aniline hues that offset the bold compartmental decorations. Familiar stacked lozenges create a towering figure that sprawls across the field. Each compartment box is outlined by crenellated spindles and filled with modular Z-motifs. Triads of familiar wolf’s mouth motifs fill the space between the zigzagging compartments while emphasizing the uncanny similarity between these right-angle motifs and symbols used in Anatolia and the Caucasus. Soft apple green inner borders feature bright red florets set over zigzagging branches. Modular triangle motifs with dotted accents line the perimeter of the field while reflecting colors from the bright and wonderfully diverse palette.
