A Beautiful Oversized Antique Persian Bidjar Rug, Country of Origin: Persia, Circa Date: 1920 – The antique Persian Bidjar rugs use striking colors and beautiful designs. This large example is from the 1920’s and features complex geometric shapes and tribal motifs for a piece that is unique and will make a statement. This rug is a larger piece that will add scale and dimension to the space.

Bidjar is located in the Northwestern corner of Persia in an area that is populated by the Kurdish people. At the turn of the 20th century, it was home to a thriving population of about 20,000 and was known as a center of the carpet industry. The influence of the Kurdish rug weavers can be seen in many of the designs of the area.

The antique Persian area rugs from Bidjar are made with fine craftsmanship and superior wool. Many of the large size carpets were custom made rugs for Persian nobility and Western aristocrats. The designs are spontaneous and are often asymmetric. In this piece, larger motifs form the structure of the design and add repetition, but the smaller motifs in the background take on the individual character of the weaver. Many of the larger commissioned pieces were woven on the family level throughout the countryside surrounding the city.

This is a spectacular piece that would be an excellent rug for a traditional room design. Bidjar carpets are also an excellent choice for a transitional space where they can bridge two different artistic styles. The antique rugs from Bidjar use traditional motifs, such as the Herati or “fish” design motif, and transforming them into styles that are unique to the area.

This Persian Bidjar rug demonstrates the artistry and level of skill for which the Persian rug weavers are known. This is one remarkably durable area rug that is also a beautiful masterpiece and a fine example of Bidjar artistry and weaving traditions. It will make a statement and is sure to last for many more years.
