Delicate vine cloud bands arrayed as diagonal strips repeat gracefully across the soft tan field of what has to be one of the more exquisite antique Peking rugs. Over half the cloud bands are barely discernible because of their tone on tone coloration. The border adapts these motifs and their color effects as an outer frame for the entire composition, giving the whole rug a remarkable visual unity and decorative effect. Simultaneously evocative of the tradition from which it was born and boldly outside of that tradition, this exciting Peking rug is truly a one of a kind piece.
