Lurid floral patterns and stylized vinescrolls with angular contours decorate the sharply contrasting Kohl black field of this stately antique rug from Kashan.

Fine Antique Persian Kashan Rug, Persia, Late 19th Century – Woven in Kashan circa 1880, this exceptional antique Persian rug features an angular inset medallion with strong rectilinear geometry that is not always seen in a region known for its lush curvilinear designs. The obscure Kohl black background dramatically offsets the ivory medallion, aqua quatrefoil and turquoise-blue accents. Branching vinescrolls feature elaborate sconced palmettes supported by stout stems and stylized foliage. Tawny oxidized yellow guardbands decorated with an archetypal pattern of reciprocating vinescrolls frame both sides of the Kohl black main borders, which feature reciprocating floral motifs linked by polychromatic vinescrolls with angular elbows. This exceptional antique rug from Kashan features a spectacular combination of masculine geometry paired with hyper realistic details.
