Antique Khotan Rug, East Turkestan, Circa 1900 – Woven in Khotan circa 1900, this antique rug features double medallion surrounded by vases, branching pomegranate motifs and regionally significant symbols. Angular spandrels embellished with mauve strap work and ornate rosettes define the corners of the subdued blue-gray field. Multiple sets of narrow borders decorated with lively floral motifs offset the cool tones and symbolic designs used within the field. Gentle floral patterns with meandering vine scrolls and reciprocating foliage contrast the gravity of the symbolic pomegranate theme. Ruyi-shaped clouds with radiant sun rays create a high-contrast inner border while the surrounding guard bands feature gentle floral patterns decorated with fern-like foliage and colorful blossoms arranged in a reciprocating composition. Created circa 1900, this antique rug from Khotan features traditional patterns rendered in an unexpected combination of coral pink, celery green, crimson and stormy blue.
