East Turkestan Rugs — Antique Khotan Rug from East Turkestan, early twentieth century – early 20th century – While antique Khotan rugs often utilized designs of Chinese derivation, this one looks decidedly to the west. The allover rug pattern of grand stepped medallions enclosed in a darker stepped network combines features from various types of Turkoman rugs from the region to the north of Iran. The borders too are very Turkoman. The sand and saffron coloration, however, is pure Khotan, very different from the darker tones of the related Turkoman rugs. This more decorative color scheme nicely balances the excitement of the design.
