Antique Khotan, East Turkestan, early twentieth century – Three central medallions surrounded by a welter of smaller medallions, stylized shrubs, and geometric motifs in shades of gold and mauve all sprawl dynamically over the midnight blue field of this dazzling antique Khotan. With its soft blue-green ground, the highly abstract and relatively spare vine scroll border offers just the right contrast to the deeper tonality and lace-like complexity of the field. While the main medallions and borders the influence classic Chinese rug design, the richly ornamented field suggests the influence Persian carpets from further west.
