Antique Oriental Pomegranate Design Khotan Rug, East Turkestan, Turn of the Century – This antique carpet from Khotan features an archetypal vase and medallion pattern incorporating loosely spaced symbols woven in a classic combination of oxidized blue and muted earth tones. Multiple borders, including fretwork scrolls and narrow guardbands decorated with constellated roundels, complement the delicate branching vase motifs used within the field. Symbolic volute medallions, floral motifs with recurved petals and potent pomegranate motifs decorate the sandy field. Woven around the turn of the century, this antique carpet features a traditional elongated format with cultural designs from East Turkestan and broader influences from Chinese weavers.
