Vintage Swedish Kilim, Origin: Sweden, Circa: Mid-20th Century – This marvelous vintage Swedish kilim rug is folksy, whimsical and fully captures the spirit of historic Scandinavian vintage rugs and regional handcrafts. In keeping with the goals of Sweden’s handcraft revival, this splendid floral carpet depicts whimsical designs that are at the heart of Sweden’s folk traditions and representative of the historic creations that textile experts were tasked with cataloguing and preserving. The glaucous blue field is adorned with a spacious, brightly colored arabesque centered around a delicate pimpernel floret. Branching floral sprays, tulips, arching racemes and pinwheel flowers are artfully arranged around the floral centerpiece. These crewelwork-style patterns are accompanied by a fluid flower-and-leaf frame and glaucous outer borders filled with geometric florets. The angular flat-weave designs have a strong folksy style closely related to the rectilinear shapes used in needlepoint, knitting, weaving and Scandinavian handcrafts.
