Large Size Antique Persian Sultanabad Carpet – Inspired by the ‘sunburst’ pattern of classical Caucasian carpets, a monumental design of quatrefoil palmettes repeats across the field of this palatial antique Sultanabad rug. Smaller palmettes and linking tendrils fill the intervening areas. The relatively soft palette of golds, saffron, and tan, with only sparing use of reds, soft blues, and greens, however, softens the medallion outlines, imparting more of an overall vine scroll effect to the design. The main border continues this finer vine scroll emphasis, but set against a lovely aqua ground for a delicate framing contrast, underscored by fine narrow minor borders.
