Large Richly Hued Antique Turkish Oushak Geometric Rug, Country of Origin: Turkey, Circa Date: 1900
At a distance the field reads grey-green. Up close it is nothing of the kind — a warm dusty taupe, with no cool tone and no green anywhere in the rug. The border is what produces the illusion: a saturated marigold that pushes the quieter wool beside it toward its opposite.
Coral and rust palmettes repeat across the field inside a diamond lattice, with small ivory figures set between them. The drawing is geometric throughout — every palmette, leaf and lattice line breaks into steps rather than curving, and the border carries the same forms at a larger scale in coral against the gold.
At 11 ft 8 in by 16 ft 4 in this is a genuinely large carpet, at the top of the 12 x 15 size range and big enough for a full dining room or an open living space. Another footprint entirely can be woven to order as a custom rug.
