Swedish Rug, Scandinavia – Attributed to Ingrid Dessau, this spectacular vintage Swedish rug features a graphic pattern of compartmental tiles arranged in a generous room-sized composition. Dessau was an accomplished master weaver and textile artist known for her fantastic use of color and great attention to the selection of each hue. The spectacular compartmental field is framed by complementary borders that vary in color but retain the same geometric form. Rectilinear tiles framed by postage-stamp squares serve as the foundation for the composition while alternating colors and combinations of patchwork squares and tonal patterns provide added interest and maintain the strong symmetry. Minute dividing lines filled with acute triangles produce additional variation while separating the deep ultramarine field from the lighter azure borders. This grand compartmental composition highlights Dessau’s contemporary style, innate artistry and superb use of color.
