Intricately Patterned Antique Turkish Oushak Rug, Country of Origin: Turkey, Circa Date: 1900
A framed panel sits inside the rug rather than filling it. Within the frame the drawing is dense — angular palmettes and serrated leaves in saffron, oatmeal and brown over a red ground. Outside it the same red runs on, quieter, ruled with a fine gold lattice and set with large pale lozenges. An oatmeal border of red and gold flowers closes the whole thing.
Two densities of the same idea, then, and the panel edge is where they meet. There is no cool colour anywhere in the rug — no blue, no green — so the pale passages are warm oatmeal rather than the grey-blue an Oushak often carries. Every shape is cut from straight lines, which is the geometric habit the weaving is known for.
At 10 ft by 13 ft 4 in it falls in the 10 x 14 size range and will take a full living room with the furniture standing on it. Price is available on request, and the design can be rewoven to your dimensions as a custom rug.
