The ground is a soft khaki that reads as green against the marigold border — closer to sage than the wool actually is. Over it, small ivory rosettes are scattered by the dozen, with marigold lozenges, salmon palmettes and thin pink stems filling the space between them. A dark red appears only in the smallest marks.
The ivory rosettes are what hold it together. They are the only element repeated at anything like a steady interval, so they read as a field of their own beneath everything else, and the larger figures sit on that rhythm rather than making one. The border keeps its own count: a single hooked figure in dark red and ivory, repeated the whole way round.
