Vintage Moroccan Rug, Morocco, Mid 20th Century – This well-composed vintage rug from Morocco incorporates a fantastic variety of age-old protection symbols woven into a modern repeating pattern. The expansive field is divided into distinct segments each featuring a unique pattern that is essential to the symmetric composition. There are divided lozenges used to protect against the evil eye and ladder-like zigzag stripes with extended burdock appendages that are said to capture nefarious spirits. The graphic low-contrast color scheme and clever placement of the repeating figures produce a number of secondary patterns and decorative figures. This innovative use of positive and negative space and subtle textures creates a fabulous result that is decorative, modern and full of nuances that are ready to be discovered.
