Antique Tabriz Rug, Persia, circa 1900 – A staggered design of quatrefoil medallions and palmettes in shades of blue and gold unfolds across the deep ivory ground on this lushly animated antique Tabriz. The approximately square spaces between the quatrefoils are filled by still smaller quatrefoil medallions emitting flowers and vines that form a delicate network across the whole ground. A main border of arabesque palmettes is set against a gold ground, flanked by minor vine scroll borders on blue. The combination of the filed and border is especially harmonious and unified, making this an outstanding decorative rug.
