Silk Kashan rug, Persia, Early 20th Century – richly colored silk Kashan; this rug partakes of a weaving tradition that dates back to the 16th century. Kashan is known for producing fine silk rugs with floral designs. Here a red-and-blue central medallion sits in a yellow field. Willow trees in the upper and lower quadrants of the medallion are repeated in the rug’s corner spandrels. The blue in the inner portion of the medallion is echoed in the border.
