The border’s background is defined by this Stygian darkness, while zig-zagging patterns in gold and vermilion run along the Persian rug’s foreground, further defining the space and drawing the viewer’s eyes to the petals found at the empty space of each diagonal line. At the center of the antique rug, a complex pomegranate shape dominates the foreground, and several layers of color lead to the very heart, playing with the viewer’s perception of negative and positive space.
