Fine Weave Antique Persian Kashan Rug, Persia, Date: 19th century – Styled by the great ustad Mohtashem, this splendid antique Kashan carpet incorporates all of the iconic details and features of a classical Persian medallion in a more compact and manageable size. Oxidized Persian blues, dominant brick tones and creamy ivory details are balanced beautifully within the heavily patterned medallion and lacy vine-filled borders. Blue spandrels and terracotta accent pieces frame the elegant extended medallion that incorporates distinctive Mohtashem curves and niches that fill the field from side to side and end to end. Crenelated fence details flank the understated guard bands and add a subtle touch of tribal style. The rural feel of these turreted embellishments contrasts the curvilinear main borders, which display a riot of floriferous vines and morning glories that represent the city side of Persia’s great carpets.
