Extremely Fine Weave Antique Late 19th century Persian Mohtashem Kashan Rug, Persia, Circa 1880 – Striking in its soft colors and ornate floral decorations, this antique Persian Kashan carpet displays a wealth of iconic Mohtashem decorations rendered in an airy, surprisingly feminine color scheme. Expressing the atelier’s talent for complex multi-part medallions, the opulent pastel field features a diminutive octofoil surrounded by a sweeping ogival frame that encircles the palmette-like pendants and blends into the superb spandrels, which feature overlapping botehs and a series of steps and coves that have an architectural formality. The soft, detail-heavy medallion and field are surrounded by delicate strap work guard bands and lavish tulip borders, a Mohtashem favorite and a hallmark of Kashan’s most famous master weaver. Soft hues of oxidized terracotta, ivory, clay blue and sandy browns blend beautifully with the strong botanical decorations while giving this antique Mohtashem rug a distinguished feminine appearance.
