Antique Needlepoint, France, 1920’s – This needlepoint carpet features an outstanding millefleur pattern woven with a tremendously varied color palette. Formal inner borders featuring an intricate filigree pattern and outer borders decorated with pink floral swags set over a Kohl black background create an impressive frame for the stark white field. Intimated paisley spandrels formed by arching acanthus leaves provide a formal placeholder for each corner while a promenade of flower-flanked scrolls complements the decorative royal blue scroll work that surrounds the central medallion. This fantastic piece includes architectural patterns inspired by French rug design traditions spanning hundreds of years while the colorful bouquets rendered in a combination of purple, gold, maroon, yellow and vibrant green are uniquely suited to the 1920’s.
