Antique Oushak Rug, Turkey, 1900 — The colors of this lovely rug do not emerge clearly from the photograph. However, the outstanding attention to detail in the piece does appear very clear. The field displays a motif of four separate, highly intricate, alternating geometric designs. Two of these patterns reflect predominating floral imagery, with blossoms forming the central point of interest. The other two geometric shapes both contain extensive ruyi symbols; these two abstract patterns resemble mirror images of one another. A cream colored border displays a regular motif of blossoms. The triple guard borders repeat the interspersing patterns of floral blossoms and ruyi symbols with meticulous attention to fine detail. Oushak rugs originate in Anatolia, and are named after a town which attained acclaim as a center of weaving and rug manufacture under the Ottoman Empire. These types of rugs frequently present brilliant gold or red colors.
