Vintage Moroccan Berber Runner Rug, Origin: Morocco, Circa: Mid-Twentieth Century – Here is an exciting and beautiful vintage carpet – a vintage Berber rug that was woven in Morocco during the middle years of the twentieth century. Vintage Moroccan rugs and carpets of Berber design are considered to be among the most desirable of all mid-century rugs and carpets, and are valued for the deep sense of cultural verisimilitude suggested by their designs. This particular example beautifully expresses some of the finer points of the style, from its pallet to the eccentric nature of its detail elements. Many mid-century Moroccan rugs and carpets feature an ivory field that is decorated with abstract elements, often rendered in shades of brown or black. In this particular example, the field is indeed a lovely shade of ivory, while the crisscrossing network of detail elements and line work is woven with a soft shade of brown. Seemingly random to the untrained eye, this jumble of symbols is in fact anything but: the Berber weavers of this carpet infused it with the sign and symbols with significance in their own culture.
