Moroccan Carpet, Morocco, Mid 20th Century – This outstanding vintage rug from Morocco features a number of densely woven protection symbols rendered in a striking achromatic combination of ivory and somber walnut brown. As the barbed burdock motifs and divided lozenges cross the field, the intricate repeating pattern gradually morphs from large-scale burdock motifs to tightly spaced lozenges set over a densely patterned background. Borrowing from thousands of years of tradition, this symbolic vintage rug features ancient burdock symbols with extended limbs that are designed to capture nefarious spirits. Symbolic lozenges with checkered segments also serve to nullify the evil eye by dividing the forces of malevolent spirits and counteracting their effects. This densely patterned rug created in Morocco circa 1950 features a diverse variety of ancient symbols that create many secondary patterns and layers of detail.
