Created in Laos, this robust antique textile features colorful crab motifs, bold stripes and a variety of decorative accent pieces that create a stunning result.

Textile, Laos, Early 20th Century – Auspicious crab motifs woven in carefully selected colors adorn the beautifully decorated field of this magnificent antique Laotian textile. Said to represent the crab that lives in water and is a symbol of an abundant harvest, these auspicious motifs represent the ritualistic and cultural symbolism that is prized in Laotian textiles. Intricately patterned stripes incorporating bold contrasting colors divide the field and support the decorative pattern of repeating jewel-tone lozenges that decorates the upper part of the field. Even the reciprocating triangles featured in the striped borders are imbued with ancient symbols that are cultural, religious and mythical.
