Antique Kashan, Persia, circa 1910’s– On this sumptuous antique Kashan a richly contoured and finely embellished medallion with finials spews forth a spiraled mesh of fine vine scrolls teeming with tiny flowers and palmettes on a jet black ground. Elaborate arabesque corner pieces enclose the field echoing the detail and coloration of the medallion. In turn a vine scroll main border echoes the design of the field on a somewhat fine scale, framing the overall composition while preserving a uniform design texture and palette. As a result this piece strikes an ideal balance between the spirit of classic Persian rug design and the harmonious principles essential to the best decorative carpets.
