Boldly Patterned Vintage Persian Gabbeh Rug, Country of Origin: Persia, Circa Date: Vintage – Three large lozenges descend the middle. Each is differently colored, in aubergine, then bright orange, then near-black, and ringed in ivory sawtooth. Smaller lozenges in ivory, grey, and orange sit in pairs to either side. The ground behind them changes halfway down. The rug’s field undergoes a gradual color change, from deep crimson to a lighter rose in one clean horizontal break.
The break in hue was not planned, but instead the result of naturally dyed wool. It is where one dye lot ended and the next began, unintentionally splitting the composition in two. The frame is elaborate by Gabbeh standards, employing an ivory sawtooth, then orange, then a dark comb band at the outer edge. Its graphic composition reads as bold at every scale.
At 4 ft 3 in by 6 ft 10 in this is the largest of its group; the 4 x 6 size rugs sit nearest, and the red carries a room on its own. Price is available on request, and the design can be ordered at a different size as a custom rug.
