Vintage Swedish Rya Rug, Origin: Sweden, Circa: Mid-Twentieth Century – Here is a dynamic and energetic vintage carpet – a vintage Swedish Rya shag pile rug that was woven in Sweden. Highly abstract and imaginative, this vintage carpet is an excellent example of some of the more expressionist trends that developed in the art world during the mid-twentieth century. Superficially, the composition of this carpet seems to consist simply of a jumble of colors – there is no concrete structure to speak of. However, as is often the case with abstract compositions such as this piece, closer looks unveil certain things that evade us at first. For instance, this carpet makes tremendous use of negative space. With the intriguing exception of a grouping of red horizontal stripes near the center of the composition, colors in this carpet behave in a certain way: when they are about to come into contact with one another, they give way to the ivory color of the carpet’s background. A comely and intriguing work, this vintage rug is a compelling example.
