Beautifully Patterned Antique Persian Malayer Allover Rug, Country of Origin: Persia, Circa Date: 1900
From a few feet away the field reads dark, though the wool between the drawing is a warm pale apricot. A lattice of small diamonds runs end to end, each compartment holding a rosette, serrated leaves turning off the corners. The tracery is near-black, set densely enough to carry the tone of the whole field. Cream lozenges and faded rose accents interrupt the repeat.
Nothing is drawn with a curve. Every hook, leaf and outline is stepped, which is the geometric habit this weaving is known for. The border works to a different rhythm — a soft sage grey ground carrying broad apricot palmettes and vine, held between narrow tan guard stripes.
At 6 ft 7 in by 9 ft 1 in it falls in the 6 x 9 size range, enough to hold a seating group without crowding a mid-sized room. Different proportions can be commissioned as a custom rug.
