Finely Woven Antique Persian Sarouk Farahan Rug, Persia, Late 19th Century – Antique Farahans like this are famed for their combination of classic Persian design with the spontaneous drawing and graphics of village rugs. Here a monumental, two-tiered, scalloped medallion design in ivory and cocoa, replete with palmettes and vine scrolls, hovers dramatically against a blue-black ground with viney floral detail. Red-ground cornerpieces round out the field, surrounded by a main border of cartouches filled with calligraphy, and flanked by vine scroll minor borders. The quality of the rich saturated color is simply incomparable. In combination with the animated drawing it makes for a rug with genuine interest and excitement.
