Antique Khotan Rug, Origin: East Turkestan, Circa: 19th Century – This magnificent antique Khotan rug is the epitome of classic East Turkestan rug design. A cruciform central medallion spews forth small pomegranates, surrounded by smaller openwork medallions, cloud bands, and rosettes. The colors of the field pattern vary enormously across the surface imparting a sense of deep space and a dynamic, ever-shifting quality to the design. This openness and delicacy in the field contrasts with the more solid rectilinear of the enclosing cloud and fretwork borders.
