Antique Turkish Hereke Geometric Pattern Rug, Country of Origin: Turkey, Circa Date: 1920
Much of the visual character of this antique Turkish Hereke rug comes from the tension between strict repetition and a conspicuous break at the center. Hundreds of small octagonal compartments are arranged in tightly aligned horizontal rows across the muted plum-brown field, each enclosing a compact ornamental device. Their extraordinary regularity creates an almost gridded geometric pattern that can be read clearly even before its individual details come into focus.
Interrupting that repetition is a large stepped ivory diamond positioned on the vertical axis. Smaller projecting forms extend above and below it, while scattered motifs occupy the pale interior rather than continuing the dense compartment pattern of the surrounding field. This contrast in both color and scale transforms the ivory form into a distinct central medallion, with the repeated octagons functioning almost as a patterned backdrop around it.
The same stepped outlines reappear at the four corners, where ivory spandrels cut into the darker field and reinforce the rug’s strong symmetry. Around this interior, an unusually elaborate sequence of narrow borders creates layer after layer of enclosure. Red-and-ivory diagonal bands alternate with lighter floral strips and darker linear guards, while small blossoms, leaves and occasional compact figures punctuate the wider pale bands. The predominance of rust red, faded burgundy, cream and muted brown gives the intricate construction a remarkably unified palette.
