Rug #43244 Antique Malayer, Persia, late nineteenth century – While the weave shows unmistakably that this sumptuous antique carpet is a Malayer, its classical design of shield palmettes is extraordinary among carpets of this kind. Here the design consists of shield-like escutcheons or cartouches arranged in staggered alternation with serrated palmette forms, all with interior floral detail. The alternation in form and detail is underscored by alternations in color, giving the entire design a dynamic pulsating rhythm. The palmette vine scroll border is set against a navy ground for framing contrast. The rich saturated color is simply extraordinary, recalling one again the great Persian masterpieces of the classical era.
