Antique Persian Serapi Geometric Medallion Rug, Country of Origin: Persia, Circa Date: 1920
Almost nothing here is a strong colour. A large stepped medallion holds the centre in warm ivory, set on a soft coral field, with cream spandrels closing the corners. The outlines dividing them are a quiet grey-green, and no dark tone or true blue appears anywhere in the rug.
The drawing is entirely geometric — every leaf, hook and rosette assembled from small stepped facets, never a curve. The border steps down to a soft oatmeal that reads green against the coral, carrying angular lozenges and ivory palmettes between fine coral outlines.
At 10 ft by 11 ft 9 in it is very nearly square, which suits a room where the seating faces inward rather than a long rectangular space. The medallion scales to other proportions as a custom rug.
